  Deer Facts

  • A buck grows new antlers each year.
  • White-tailed deer can run at 35 mph for short distances and for 25 mph over longer distances.
  • The deer’s winter coat provides such good insulation that snow will stay on a deer’s back unmelted for extended periods of time.
  • Deer can eat 5-9 pounds of food per day.
  • Usually nutrition plays the largest role in the size and growth of antlers, as opposed to age or any other factor.
  • Deer have a keen sense of smell and hearing. They are also quick to notice movement although their ability to identify motionless objects is limited.
  • Part of the white-tailed deer’s diet is often poison ivy.
  • Mating Season for deer is referred to as “autumn rut.”

  Turkey Facts

  • Between 5,000 and 6,000 feathers cover the body of an adult turkey in patterns call feather tracks. A turkey’s feathers provide a variety of survival functions; they keep him warm and dry, allow him to fly, and show off to mates during mating season.
  • Wild turkeys have excellent vision during the day but don’t see as well at night.
  • Hens will lay a clutch of 10 to 12 eggs during a two-week period, usually laying one egg per day. She will incubate her eggs for about 28 days, occasionally turning and rearranging them, until they are ready to hatch.
  • Wild turkeys would have qualified as a "rare and endangered species" in Missouri 30 years ago.
  • In 1937, turkey numbers were so low in the state of Missouri that hunting them was not allowed until the first official season was opened in 1960 and for only parts of the state.
  • Wild turkeys are the largest of the North American game birds with an adult male weighing 17 to 30 pounds.
  • At approximately 2 weeks of age, poults can fly short distances.

  Duck Facts

  • Ducks are birds. They are also called "waterfowls" because they are normally found in places with water like ponds, streams and rivers. They are related to geese and swans. The duck is the smallest of them all. Ducks also have shorter necks and wings and a stout body.
  • Ducks can live from 2-12 years, depending on their species.
  • Ducks have webbed feet, designed for swimming. Their webbed feet act like paddles for the ducks. A duck waddles instead of walk because of its webbed feet.
  • Do you know that the duck's feet cannot feel cold even if it swims in icy cold water? The reason for this is because its feet have no nerves or blood vessels!
  • Another special thing that ducks have is water-proof feathers. There is a special gland that produces oil near the duck's tail which spreads and covers the outer coat of the duck's feathers, making them water-proof. Beneath the water-proof coat are fluffy and soft feathers to keep the duck warm.
