Hi folks. My name is Kurt Surber, dshootnstgentemn on the MOE message boards. You can call me just “DSG” or Kurt. I am fortunate enough to be one of the founding members of MOE.

Let me take you back about 35 years to an event that impacted me greatly and typifies the whole MOExperience.

At the time, my Mother, a housewife of a farmer (my Dad) was working part time at the Fountain Grove Wildlife area preparing for the annual registration draw. Just like so many times I was turned loose to roam Ft Grove on my own while she worked. It was not a problem because I knew Ft Grove at age 10 as well as I knew the way around my own bed room. The reason being; my Dad took me there when he wasn't working at every opportunity to hunt and fish, whatever the season may be.

This particular day an elderly couple happened into the headquarters building while I pilfered about. The couple was inquiring as to how to go about catching some fish because they were having a hard time.

Being only 10 years old my confidence overflowed. My Dad had taught me well in the ways of catching fish from the “Bar” pits in the summer at the “Grove.” When I heard of the elderly couple’s plight I offered to show them the ropes. I am sure they thought, “right, this kid is gonna show us something.” But they humored me nevertheless.

I took the couple to a mud hole right along the east side of the Pool 3 levy. I proceeded to bait their hooks with my own concoction of bait that my Dad and I had made up. It consisted of pumpkin pie filling and corn flakes, and if you didn't catch any fish to eat you could always eat the bait because it was tasty. I know, I tried it. . In short order the couple had four really nice carp on their stringer up to five pounds and were ecstatic. They insisted that I take a quarter a fish for their catch for a total of a dollar for my efforts. Even at that age, the money was nice, but I can remember even today the sense of self satisfaction I got from passing on what I had been taught. That feeling was worth far more than any money I had made.

That event planted the seed that eventually sprouted into a career as a professional hunting and fishing guide, one that spanned nearly 30 years of my life. From guiding waterfowl hunters in the bottoms around Ft Grove to deer hunters in the uplands of my farm, then eventually to the waters of Truman Lake and it's surrounding properties. It was a life that many people would envy.

Having been blessed with the ability to “pass on” what I had been taught I nearly always sent my clients home with a new ability or skill. To me, that was even more important than the success you shared on that particular day.

All of those years of taking people fishing and hunting, trying to teach, coupled with the fact that I now have two young sons has motivated me, along with several others to form this organization of MOE in order to more effectively pass on those traditions that we have been taught.

Many of today’s youth are not blessed with a Father or Mother that can or will share with their children what they know about the outdoors. The end result is a generation of children that are becoming more and more disconnected from the wonderful recreation that hunting and fishing provide. It is my goal as one of the founding members of MOE to pass on what I know to this generation. And hopefully that heritage and tradition through all of our efforts will once again flourish.

Please join us in our efforts at MOE.
